FileMaker 2026 introduces an optional remote backup feature for FileMaker Server, with automatic offsite backups and integrity validation for restores. It’s also a way to meet compliance-driven backup requirements under SOC 3, HIPAA, and ISO 27001.

FileMaker 2026’s Standby Server feature also gives you the ability to create a second, synchronized server that can failover in a matter of minutes in case of an issue. Following on Claris CEO Ryan McCann’s vision for FileMaker as a foundation for building with the best AI tools available, FileMaker 2026 rolls out a host of improvements to facilitate this:

• Support for Google Gemini as an AI provider, with RAG handling for multilingual content and scanned PDFs. This is ideal for organizations that are already on Google Cloud with Gemini as their preferred AI backend.
• LLMs are trained on SQL and FileMaker can speak it, so in the new release, AI-generated DDL creates FileMaker relationships directly without the need of a translation layer.
• The ability, via Patch, for FileMaker’s Solution Upgrade Tool to allow AI to push code directly into FileMaker files, handling all schema elements — even building a file from the ground up.

If you’re not a developer, a lot of this may have little meaning for you. But if your organization wants to move more quickly and benefit from the advantages of AI in coding, these new features are worth exploring.

Stability, support, and quality-of-life updates

FileMaker 2026 incorporates improvements in handling high-volume API integrations, multitenant SaaS solutions, and bulk data jobs that need higher throughput. A new “auto-restart after crash” functionality allows WPE, OData, and Data API to restart themselves after an error, meaning a technical issue doesn’t necessarily keep a customer-facing WebDirect portal offline for extended periods. Also, OData feeds that tools such as Tableau and PowerBI rely on will see improved availability.

The new release also includes targeted additions to FileMaker Go for better hardware access and locale support, along with the ability to target windows by identity rather than name – important for solutions with specific localization features or tools such as image capture and barcode scanning in the field.

Last but definitely not least, developer productivity is also getting a boost in FileMaker 2026:

• Enhancements to the Inspector to surface only the controls relevant to the current selection, making Layout Mode more friendly for focused work. (Legacy Inspector remains available for developers who want full visibility.)
• Improved sorting capability for Custom Functions: Sorting now applies independently at each folder level rather than across the entire flat list.
• Richer PDF scripting: Developers can build, assemble, and save multi-page PDFs entirely within Script Workspace without additional plugins.

There are other minor improvements as well, from WebP container support with cross-platform compatibility, to better handling for password expiration reminders that allows you to build your own UX for password expiry.

In short, FileMaker 2026 removes quite a few small and large sources of daily friction for citizen developers and in-house dev teams, making it easier to maintain and scale custom solutions built on the platform.
