FileMaker Academy Members Create Resources For You

In early 2011, a group of leading FileMaker development companies – all Platinum–level members of the FileMaker Business Alliance – formed FileMaker Academy. The purpose of FM Academy is to further educate FileMaker users and developers to encourage best practices and foster further adoption of the software. These companies are based in various regions of the United States. 360 Works, Atlanta; MightyData, Dallas/Austin/Houston; IT Solutions, Philadelphia/New York; Anvil Dataworks, Washington, DC/Baltimore; Fiddlehead Software, Portland, OR; Kyo Logic, Westport, CT; Skeleton Key, St. Louis, MO. The best way to engage with FM Academy is to attend the monthly educational webinars. We will keep you informed of upcoming webinar topics, dates and registration details on our Skeleton Key Facebook Company page and on our Skeleton Key Crew profile page. FileMaker Training or Coaching?

Training or coaching – which is right for you? The simple answer:

  • Training is an overarching effort to teach you how to effectively use the FileMaker toolkit.
  • Coaching is a more tactical approach that focuses on learning how to apply the FileMaker toolkit to your specific application.

Here’s an analogy that might make the distinction easier to grapple with: Attending FileMaker training is like learning to be a mechanic. You’ll learn how to use a variety of tools to solve different problems on a whole range of vehicles. This is a great fit if you’ll face a broad range of challenges day to day. Coaching is like learning to fix and maintain your own car. You’ll completely skip areas of knowledge that a true mechanic needs and focus instead on learning about how to specifically address situations involving your car. Now, let’s not kid ourselves. If you’ve never picked up a wrench before, you’re not going to build a Rolls Royce the first time out – even with us coaching you along the way. We’ll help you build a working ‘car’ that will get you from point A to point B. We’ll help you continue to polish your working plan until that ‘Rolls Royce’ is a reality – in the form of a shiny, productive and efficient database. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I building one database for a specific purpose over the next 12 months?
  • Do I know what a relational database is?
  • Have I at least dabbled in FileMaker, Access or some other database platform?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to most or all of these questions, FileMaker Coaching is probably a good fit for you. One or more answers of ‘No’ likely means you should at least start with FileMaker Training. After that you’ll be in a better position to take advantage of what coaching can offer. Register for FileMaker Coaching.
